Powder coating FAQs
Common questions about powder coating, blasting, colours, durability and how we work. Can’t see yours? Get in touch.
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a dry finishing process. A fine powder of pigment and resin is given an electrostatic charge, sprayed onto the metal so it clings evenly, then cured in an oven at around 180 to 200°C where it melts and fuses into a tough, seamless skin. Compared with wet paint it’s harder wearing, more even, and uses no solvents.
How long does powder coating last?
When it’s prepared and applied properly, a powder-coated finish typically lasts 15 to 20 years, and considerably longer on items kept indoors or out of harsh weather. The real factors are surface preparation, the type of powder chosen for the job, and the environment the item lives in. An occasional wash with mild soapy water is all the upkeep most finishes need.
What metals and materials can you coat?
Almost any metal that holds an electrostatic charge and can take the curing heat. Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, alloy, cast iron and galvanised steel all coat beautifully. We’ll always advise on items with bearings, seals, springs or any plastic and low-melting-point parts, which may need stripping or masking first.
Can you powder coat alloy wheels?
Yes, it’s one of our most popular jobs. We strip and blast the wheels back to clean metal, then coat and cure them in virtually any colour or finish. For safety we don’t coat buckled or structurally damaged wheels, and we’d always recommend having them re-balanced afterwards.
What colours and finishes can I have?
Virtually any colour. We can match RAL and BS references, in gloss, satin, matt, metallic, textured or candy finishes. Bring a sample or a code and we’ll match it.
Do you offer shot and bead blasting?
Yes, in-house. Shot and bead blasting strips old paint, rust and contamination and keys the surface so the new coating bonds for the long term. Good preparation is the single biggest factor in a finish that lasts, so it’s where we take real care.
Can you handle large items and big projects?
Yes. Our curing oven is large, approximately 6 metres long, 3 metres wide and 2.2 metres high, so we can powder coat sizeable items that many coaters can’t, from long gates and railings to structural steel and large fabrications. If you’re planning a big project, give us a call to talk through the dimensions and we’ll let you know what will fit.
How long will my job take?
It depends on size and how much preparation is needed. As a guide, a set of wheels is usually 2 to 3 days; larger or multi-stage jobs take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timescale once we’ve seen the work.
How do I get a price?
We like to see every job before quoting so the estimate is accurate and there are no surprises. Send us a few photos or bring the item in, and we’ll come back to you with a price and a timescale.
How do I pay?
Payment is on collection in full, unless agreed in advance. We accept BACS and cash. We don’t currently take card payments.
Do you cover domestic and commercial work?
Both. From a single classic-car part, bicycle frame or garden bench to plant, machinery and large structural-steel runs, we work for private customers and businesses alike across Herefordshire and beyond.
